English
At the British School of Monaco, English has a pre-eminent importance as it profoundly impacts all other subjects. A high-quality education in English helps students to read, write, listen and speak fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and so that others can communicate effectively with them in turn. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.
‘Reading for Pleasure’ is at the heart of our curriculum. We aim to encourage curiosity and provide a thirst for knowledge and learning. We want to develop students’ understanding of different types of literature from a range of cultures and authors and use these as the model for exploring writing and grammar.

Science
The British School of Monaco offers a superior scientific education, providing the foundations for understanding the scientific world, with practical experiments and (working scientifically) scientific method at its heart.
Students build through their learning and experiences a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts. They are encouraged to recognise misconceptions and understand the power of rational explanation, developing a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They develop a strong sense of how science can be used to analyse causes, explain what is occurring and predict how things will behave in the future.

Mind-Up Curriculum
At the British School of Monaco, we aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for our whole school community (children, staff, parents and guardians), and recognise how important mental health and emotional wellbeing is to our lives in just the same way as physical health. We recognise that children’s mental health is a crucial factor in their overall wellbeing and can have an enormous impact on quality of life, relationships and academic achievement.
Our role in school is to ensure that teachers create a classroom environment that is characterised by compassion, promoting resilience, empathy and connection to others, and that children feel supported to access help and support when required.
We will do this through small group and whole class activities, whole school assemblies, a student focussed PSHCE curriculum, implementation of our mindfulness program and intervention groups.
Our Mind Up curriculum promotes the mental health and emotional wellbeing of our whole school community. This unique, evidence-based framework provides knowledge and understanding of neuroscience, mindful awareness, positive psychology and mindful practices to affect positive change within the classroom and beyond. The curriculum includes practices developed to help primary-aged children improve their focus, manage their emotions and face challenges with resilience, kindness and compassion. The MindUp lessons are complemented by the ‘Brain Break’. This core mindful breathing exercise which takes place three times a day enables students and staff to calm their minds, focus and get ready to learn. MindUp is used across the school from Year 1 and is central to our strategic vision; it supports us to create a whole-school culture of gratitude, optimism, happiness and respect within which we can all grow and flourish.
