About the British School of Monaco

MOTTO

SAPIENTIA IN HUMILITATAE

Wisdom in Humility

“The only wisdom we can hope to acquire
Is the wisdom of humility: humility is endless.
The houses are all gone under the sea.
The dancers are all gone under the hill.”

T.S Eliot – Four Quartets

“I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”

Isaac Newton

“The more I know the more I realise I know nothing.”

Socrates

At the British School of Monaco we strive for excellence in all that we do. We develop a set of personal, academic, physical and psychological characteristics in our students that allows them to succeed in the world and make a positive contribution to the global community.

As our students grow, we want them to remember that humility is the ultimate sign of wisdom. As they focus and work on their own self-development, they should simultaneously maintain a healthy sense of all that exists beyond themselves.

Such a perspective orients them to become properly integrated citizens of the world, and lifelong learners that never stop growing.

Practically speaking, at the British School of Monaco, ‘Wisdom in Humility’ creates an umbrella for the school’s core values, learning attributes and curriculum design.

‘Wisdom in Humility’ in the context of curriculum directly links with our Mastery approach to learning, which focuses on depth and breadth of understanding. Mastery emphasises the need for a productive struggle to reach a point of deeper learning, and supports students’ understanding that their learning journey is never complete.

With ‘Wisdom in Humility’, comes the ability to accept and seek challenges and a desire to explore, learn and be open to others’ perspectives.

As with everything at the British School of Monaco, our Motto is more than just words on a wall. We are interested in its practical impact and how it relates to our day to day interactions, reflections, behaviour and learning.

Ethos

The British School of Monaco’s ethos recognises that our values, along with the manner in which we interact with each other and the world, are as important as academic attainment. We create an environment and a developmental process to help young people evolve into confident risk takers, who recognise that valuing themselves and others is essential to being successful world citizens.

We provide our students with the opportunity to learn beyond the superficial rote learning, leading to a depth of understanding that supports retention of concepts and leads to greater understanding and engagement.

We provide an enriching and stimulating learning environment where academic success is coupled with strong moral purpose and respect for others. We recognise that mental and physical health are of prime importance to a successful and fulfilling human life.

Our Approach

The British School of Monaco approach to learning synthesises traditional, well-honed principles and best practice with groundbreaking pedagogical approaches. Built into the curriculum delivery is an understanding of how children learn and factors affecting their neurological development. This is underpinned by a recognition that the 21st century child is required to be an reflective, resilient and adaptive individual who continually strives to understand more about how they learn, and to learn more deeply, thereby maximising their broader growth and development.

The British School of Monaco is a safe and creative environment where students are supported, stimulated and challenged. We celebrate our students’ success and help them to overcome challenges with courage, resilience and curiosity. The British School of Monaco recognises that the ability to endure and overcome sustained challenges is an essential part of the path to success and helps develop character and spirit.

The British School of Monaco’s healthy and vibrant community and culture is fundamentally important to the life of the school. We recognise and value the partnership with our parents as much as the relationship with our students. We involve parents in their children’s learning and engage them in many classroom and school activities, such as curriculum workshops, assemblies, committees, after-school events, sports and home learning.
