Two Exciting Developments at the British School of Monaco

The British School of Monaco is delighted to announce two major pieces of news:

  • Secondary premises secured for Years 7-11 (ages 11 – 16), with Years 7 & 8 planned to open this September 2024.

  • Former Headmaster of Marlborough College Malaysia, Mr Alan Stevens, appointed to lead the British School of Monaco Primary and Secondary schools, and our Individual Programme

Secondary Premises Secured

We are delighted to announce that we have signed for our Secondary Premises and are on-track for our planned opening of Years 7 and 8 this September 2024. This will be followed by the consecutive opening of Years 9 (2025), 10 (2026) and 11(2027) in the coming years, with our first crop of IGCSE students taking their exams in May 2028.

In September 2028 we intend to open our 6th Form to allow students to study A-Levels in classes of up to 16 students per year.

We are now, therefore, welcoming applications from Years 1 – 8 (ages 5 – 13) for this September 2024.

The Secondary premises will include space for a science laboratory, art room and music facilities, and has a playground attached to it.

Our current Secondary offering, the British School of Monaco Individual Programme (individual.britishschool.mc), continues to go from strength to strength.

We now have 24 students enrolled with us and a fantastic crop of university offers coming through.

All of our A-Level final year students have received offers from Russell Group universities, including 100% success so far with University College, London (UCL) and King’s College, London (KCL).

Exceptional Leader Appointed

We wrote to our parents at the end of September to let them know about the completion of Dr Stuart Bradley’s two-year mission with us and planned retirement at the end of this academic year. Since then we have been searching for the ideal person to fill his shoes, take-on such a pivotal role at the British School of Monaco, and lead it forward over the coming years through our ambitious development plan.

We were heartened by an extraordinary response from the international teaching community, receiving over 130 high-quality applications. We then went through a time-consuming process of shortlisting and interviewing, and eventually meeting in Monaco, before making our final decision. There were many strong candidates who would have no doubt been well-suited to the role, but one candidate stood out from the beginning. The more we got to know him, the more sure we were that he was the right person for the job.

We are delighted to announce that the next Principal of the British School of Monaco will be Mr Alan Stevens.

Alan joins The British School of Monaco with 32 years of educational experience, 25 of which have been in leadership positions in 3-18 day and boarding schools in the UK and internationally.

He is an experienced principal, having become Headmaster of Barnard Castle School in England in 2010 where he led major capital investment and building programmes. In 2017 he was asked to lead the recently established Marlborough College campus in Malaysia, where he oversaw growth, academic excellence, outstanding pastoral care and established the young school’s place as a leading British international institution. Student numbers doubled to almost 1000 with the development and promotion of its educational offering, and as its reputation blossomed nationally, in Malaysia, and Internationally, throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Under his leadership, Marlborough College, Malaysia was awarded international plaudits for wellbeing, academic achievement, boarding and strategic leadership; since 2020 it has been listed among the world’s leading 100 private schools and has been shortlisted as the TES International School of the Year. His time at Marlborough College Malaysia included steering the school through the myriad challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with leadership, resilience, vision and adaptability and also found him advising the Malaysian government on behalf of the international schools sector, for which he received an Outstanding Leadership Award in 2023 from the Kingsley Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific.

Alan studied History at Queen’s University in the United Kingdom where he gained a First Class Honours degree. He completed teaching and leadership qualifications, including an MA in Educational Management and Leadership and he has undertaken a period of research in private and state schools in the USA as an associate of Yale University.

He is an experienced school inspector, a former Director of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Chair of its the 3-18 Education Committee. He regularly publishes and contributes to conferences on education and leadership. He is married to Heather and they have a grown up son. He enjoys rugby, art, classical music, travel and literature.

Alan said:

“I am honoured to join the outstanding team at the British School of Monaco. Its culture of quality, not scale and the provision of personal, genuinely holistic education makes it one of the most exciting educational developments in international education. This is apparent in the experience of its happy, confident children and the pedagogic commitment of its excellent staff. I am delighted to be part of its unique journey as it introduces its senior school offering.”

To have someone with Alan’s strength and depth of experience leading our school forward over the coming years is testament to the quality of culture and education that Dr Bradley has carefully built with us since our opening day. As the baton passes between them, we are excited about what is to come, and very much look forward to introducing you to Alan in due course.
