Primary School
Curriculum Philosophy
At the British School of Monaco we develop strong British social, moral, cultural, intellectual, emotional and spiritual values, within a framework of physical and mental health.
At the British School of Monaco, students receive a stimulating and enriching educational experience that drives ambition and a genuine thirst for learning. We place our students and our vision for the curriculum at the heart of everything we do. This ensures that we are best placed to develop confident, adaptable and risk-taking students who are prepared for the next stages of their learning in a fast-changing world.
Our outstanding teaching combines cross-curricular, well-planned and resourced lessons with broader enrichment opportunities to extend and consolidate understanding of the curriculum. Through this we ensure that students’ depth of understanding across the curriculum is achieved and that their learning comes to life.
Within the ‘hidden curriculum’ are two critical factors: an understanding of how children learn, and a commitment to supporting students to be reflective learners with a deep awareness of themselves.
What Your Child will Learn
English National Curriculum
The school follows the National Curriculum for England which we adapt to meet local characteristics and needs. Our curriculum subjects include:
- English
- Maths
- Science
- Computing
- French
- History
- Geography
- Art
- Music
- Physical Education
Our core areas of the curriculum are English, maths and science.
English
At the British School of Monaco, English has a pre-eminent importance as it profoundly impacts all other subjects. A high-quality education in English helps students to read, write, listen and speak fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and so that others can communicate effectively with them in turn. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.
‘Reading for Pleasure’ is at the heart of our curriculum. We aim to encourage curiosity and provide a thirst for knowledge and learning. We want to develop students’ understanding of different types of literature from a range of cultures and authors and use these as the model for exploring writing and grammar.

We are providing the plans for Year 6, please note Year 6 will open in September 2023.
Maths
Maths is a creative and highly interconnected discipline. It is essential for everyday life. The British School of Monaco prioritises a high-quality maths education with the mastery approach to learning at its core. This provides a strong foundation and enables students to reason mathematically whilst giving them an appreciation of and curiosity for the beauty of maths.

Science
The British School of Monaco offers a superior scientific education, providing the foundations for understanding the scientific world, with practical experiments and (working scientifically) scientific method at its heart.
Students build through their learning and experiences a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts. They are encouraged to recognise misconceptions and understand the power of rational explanation, developing a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They develop a strong sense of how science can be used to analyse causes, explain what is occurring and predict how things will behave in the future.

French Language Curriculum
The British School of Monaco believes that learning French will provide a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all students.
Students develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between French and English.
We believe that language is at the heart of all learning. It is how information is received and communicated from the earliest stages of our development. Therefore, learning a language helps develop the understanding of the many purposes for which language is used.
At the British School of Monaco, we are committed to the provision of French language learning, beginning in the lower primary years and developing throughout our students’ journey.
English is the language of instruction throughout the school in all subjects. French language classes are compulsory from Year 1 to Year 6. Teaching is differentiated to challenge native and non-native speakers at an appropriate level.
On admission to the school parents/guardians are asked to state which group would be best suited for their child’s needs.
Alongside speaking and listening, reading, writing and vocabulary development, it is one of our priorities to encourage rich French literature and language in our school. Opportunities to speak French outside of the classroom are encouraged, so children become immersed in the language. Participation in key events like poetry recitations, participation in assembly and attendance at French club are also encouraged.
Enrichment
The British School of Monaco’s enrichment programme offers students the opportunity to engage in
activities beyond classroom tuition. Features include:
Extra-curricular

Experiential
Education beyond the school in visits and trips enabling them to extend their learning in different contexts and discover new ideas.
Engagement
